Welcome to McNeal Growers web Site.

After years
of leting the pages here languish I have begun to update them to
reflect some of the newer plants that we are starting to grow. The
plant selector feature is not working and it has been the sore point
about why we can't get the information to the site.
The
site is still under construction and we hope to have it up and running
at 100% soon. Thanks for your patience.
The picture
above is a common Palm from northern Mexico, Brahea bella. It is very
cold hardy and adaptable to many difficult situtations here in Texas.
That's just
one of the 60 or so species of cold hardy palms we have started to
grow. I am putting togather the images so I can put a page up showing
some of them.
Over the
Years we have refined a list of plant species suitable for
wetland plantings. In the drier parts Texas traditional wetland
species don't work. We have genotypes local clones that have the
ability to withstand drought that would kill their eastern kin.
A common
Problem here in Central Texas is the availability of certain kinds of
plants adaptable for our soils and climate. W are trying to grow a
broader range of species so that we have more choices. Another
factor is collecting seed and cuttings from individual plants that have
superior characteristics like increased cold or drought tolerance. We
are growing Sophora
secondiflora, mountain laural from seed collected in New Mexico
and can take temperatures as low as -15. We now have Montezuma Cypress Taxodium mucronatum that can take
-15 to -20 degrees. We have a Hybrid Oak we call Winergreen that turns
red late and holds it leaves through Febuary. I also have a Cork Oak Quercus suber that can withstand
temperatures down as low as -15. Those plant are just the tip of the
Iceberg for what we have gotten into now.
